The Word! 003

Round 3, FIGHT!  Back again with some more stories that I feel should infiltrate you mind.  If you’ve had enough, tough, because we are just getting warmed up.  So today we have some brain food, with a side of Nick’s GUTS, a Droid, some old Viking, a little music, a little reading, some crazy Chinese idea and Pirates Hidden Booty!  Oh, and Monkeys an Flying Squirrels! Yes, I know, your welcome. Enjoy.

Meat Eaters

Not to offend any of you Veggies out there but according to Leslie Aiello, an anthropologist and director of the Wenner-Gren Foundation in New York City, which funds research on evolution, humans have evolved and our brains have grown since our diets have adopted meat into them.  Pre-carnivorous humans had a diet of mainly fruits, nuts, and small plants, all of which are very low in calories and proteins which give us energy.  Our bodies had to consume more of these foods for the energy required to live.  Having to digest more food made our bodies use most of our energy from the digested food to digest more food instead of to our brains making us smarter.  As meat was introduced into humans diets people consumed less food substance while keeping more energy from less digestion allowing our brains to sap up all that excess energy.  Here we are today, omnivores, smart, well adapted, and still can’t figure out how to live in peace with others (thats a whole nother topic though).

Lost Gold

I’m not from NYC, although I have been there multiple times and love it, this is just one more reason for me to go back.  Welostourgold.com has hidden $10,000 somewhere within the five boroughs of New York and it is in a pirates chest.  A group of puppets, all whom are pirates (well one’s a ninja) have hit it big on some loot, only to lose it again.  Now you have got to find it.  No joke! 10 Grand.  First finder, you get it.  Seriously.  I can get a plane ticket out there for $600, stay in a hotel for $500 for a week and find that money and have made $8,000+, and my week paid for!  Hmmmmm… …(travelocity.com)

This is a great list of classic books that should be required reading for all Americans.  I have read about half of these myself and look forward to reading the rest.  Some classics on this list include : To Kill a Mocking Bird, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, War & Peace, The Art of War, The Republic, Walden, etc, etc.  How many of these books have you read?  Have you even heard of all these.  Spend some time in your local library and pick up some of these great American Classics.  (If you search some of these books on google book search the ful text of the book is online and you can read from your computer.

The Brett Farve Saga

Brett oh Brett, how America loves your reality TV show entitled, Will He Play Again?  It seems as if ESPN, news channels everywhere, NFL fans, Packer fans, Viking fans, sports fans in general cannot get enough of your ongoing drama.  Mr. Farve I think you are  completely capable of playing another NFL season, even a winning NFL season, maybe a Superbowl winning season.  I would love for the graybeard to come back and play again.  As long as I can remember #4 has always been a threat to any NFL team matched up against him.  Although I am damn near my whit’s end with this see-saw of yes he has to come back or no he is retiring.  Enough already!  Just play or go away!

Monkeys Hate Squirrels

Kenji Onishi loves monkeys, macaques to be exact.  He believes that human evolution and these animals had similar ancestors and finds much value in studying these monkeys behavioral pattern to learn about human instincts.  In his studies at Osaka University in Japan, he has noticed a very strange rivalry with some neighboring mammals.  The Pteromyini (Flying Squirrels) sends the macaques into a fit of yelling and screaming as well as becoming threatening in posture and mood every time the squirrel flys over the monkeys area. (Check out video here) At first researchers figured that the macaques must think that the animal must be a threatening bird and are just trying to defend themselves from attack with their display.  As the macaques get closer to the squirrel they become frightened and hesitant to use force and attack.  Eventually the monkeys realize the squirrel is no threat and leave them alone.  But as soon as the squirrels fly again, It’s On!  So what do we learn about this?  Hmmm.  Don’t fly over monkeys looking like a bird?  I don’t really know, but this story has monkeys and squirrels so I approve.

Nickelodeon

So if you are somewhere around the same age as me you will definitely have some flashbacks with these 6 videos.  Remember Double Dare or What Would You Do with Mark Summers, how about Legends of the Hidden Temple with Kirk Fogg,  or my favorite GUTS with Mike and Mo!…….  …………………………..       ………………………………………………… …………………………………  Sorry I just lost myself for a second there.  How I used to imagine myself making it to the top of the Aggro Crag 1st and winning a piece of the rock to take home.  Or getting on TV with my family and winning Double Dare and going on some crazy vacation.  I used to love Nickelodeon.  What happened to kids shows like these.  Now you have Drake and Josh and other shows that seem too much like Friends or some other similar adult sitcom rather than a kids TV show.  Oh well maybe it’s just a sign of the times.  I don’t feel old often yet, but this definitely makes me see I am no longer the youngest generation.  With my age though, I can remember these gems in time, so not all is bad.

Busses

Why does it seem that the our Eastern brothers in China always have such cool, inventive, ingenious ideas?  Can we get some of them please!?  Here is just another example of Chinese brainstorming genius.  Busses on the road are definitely a traffic hinderance.  This new idea of a bus eliminates the slow moving, in the way, always stopping big ogar of a vehicle.  Not by taking them off the road or flying around or some crazy new suspension road but simply using the SoCal raised truck theory and taking it to the max.  The busses allow cars less than 2 meters tall to drive right underneath them while the people on the bus ride above in the passenger compartment.  As far as stops, they become raised off the ground and people can exit and board the bus while the bus is in the middle of traffic without stopping the flow of cars as they pass underneath.  Genius.  Construction on the track for these busses will begin near the end of 2010.  I want to ride these things!  Why couldn’t I imagine this idea up?
