Japan’s Nuclear Power Plants

By now I’m sure you all have heard and are worried about the tsunami and earthquake that happened in Japan.  You have probably also heard about the nuclear plants exploding and radiation leaking into the atmosphere.  Well the nice people over at MIT have published an article on exactly what happened to those plants, why it happened and if you should be worried.  The article is very scientific and I am not an MIT professor or student of radioactive studies, so I am not going to summarize for you and simply tell you to click the picture and read the article yourself so you can be enlightened in this situation.

Does 4G Really Matter

You all have probably seen commercials for 4G phones and networks.  Your phone may even be 4G capable, but does that mean that your phone is faster or better in some way?  Do you know what 4G really means?   In the article Zack Epstien explains “3G” or CDMA, EDGE, EV-DO and HSPA networks as a two lane highway packed with traffic and 4G makes it a 10 lane super highway.  That’s a rough explanation, 4G allows more bandwidth to all the users and not 1 in particular.  So during peak usage times no one’s connection will suffer and during non-peak hours you will have a similar connection speed as you do right now when you are getting “5 bars.”  Oh, also, NO COMPANY TRULY CAN SUPPORT 4G ON THEIR NETWORK YET, but all wireless carriers are spending billions of dollars to be the first to have Nation Wide 4G coverage. Mind Secrets

This is one of the best articles I have read this year.  It tells a story of mental-athlete Joshua Foer and how he learned how to remember astonishing amounts of things very quickly and easily.  He is now the speed card, an event where you memorize an entire deck of shuffled cards as quickly as possible, US record holder with a time of 1:40.  In the picture you see him wearing huge earmuffs and painted hardware safety goggles to help him focus in events and training; but he started with remembering license plates as he walked around and memorizing grocery lists.  He relates improving your memory to playing an instrument, practice, practice, practice.  Now for his secret techniques he practices.  He places the things he needs to memorize into rooms, mental rooms, of places he has been and fills those rooms with detailed characters or scenes that represent things he is remembering.  When it is time for him to recite his memorization he just strolls through those mental rooms and observes the scene or characters there and associates that with what he had memorized!  It’s a long process and Joshua fully explains it in his article so click the picture and check it all out.

Ancient Mayan Temples

You probably thought that huge concerts with giant sound systems were a 20th century thing, and you have thought wrong.  Try more like a 7th century thing.  Archeologist have been studying, using sound measuring instruments on a 3D model of the site,  Ancient Mayan temples and rooms in those temples that they have found were used as “projection rooms” to broadcast a speech or music loudly to a group of people in the square below.  Through a series of chambers and passages the sound is carried from the room and amplified.  The passages were specifically aligned for maximum sound output.  This is truly an incredible feat of mans ingenius mind.  If you like ancient American history this article is a very fascinating look into what life was like many years ago.

Flaming Lips

If you are anything like me you’re saying,”The Flaming Lips, yeah whatever happened to those guys”.  Well they haven’t put out an album in almost 3 years but have been touring and recently released a single with an interesting concept behind it.  The song is divided and released into 12 separate tracks/YouTube videos that must be played simultaneously to hear the full song or mixed and matched to create your own remix.  The idea was to create “social music” by having 12 friends play the song on their smart phones all together.  Cool idea.  If you don’t have 11 friends handy right now and still want to hear the song click the picture and check out a site where some genius put all the videos on the same page controlled by one START button. (let the videos load for a second before you click play so they dont buffer and get off track)

iDaft Online Soundboard /and iPhone-iPad App

I’m gonna come right out and say that this is a total waste of time, yet I still find myself doing this all the time and showing everyone I know.  The online soundboard for Daft Punk song’s Technologic and Harder Better Faster Stronger is entrancing.  Also there is an iTunes store app for your iPhone/Pod/Pad.  So go download it or go to the website and waste some time in some techno-remix-pure-fun!

Free Music Downloads

(if all 3 cds don’t show up try refreshing the page)

Here’s some totally free music for your downloading pleasure.  First CD is a DJ from Austin, TX.  This is my favorite of the three 3 Cds.  Very hip and feel good vibes from Rockwell 9000.  This whole CD is good but make sure to check out tracks: It’s a Good Life, Take Notes, and Yup Yup.

(UPDATE: apparently Mr. Rockwell ran out of free download credits so the CD is now 5$, I got it free but would pay 5$ for it)

.

Next is a up-and-coming R&B artist named Stephen A. Smith.  I see this kid having a bright future in the music business.  He writes and produces his own music but with a more professional producer he could be a radio staple.  Check out tracks: International Man, Love Effortlessly and Superhero.

.

Finally is a blues harmonica player named Mark Schottinger.  This guy is really talented and made this whole CD himself while going through Law School!  So take a listen and download whatever you like!  Check out all the tracks, theres only 7 and I like them all!

Average Face Composites

This is an awesome study of humanity.  The people at faceoftomorrow.com have taken photo images of numerous people across the planet and mapped out and made composite images of what the average male/female of a given area looks like.  It’s fun to look at all the people and see how different and similar we all are.  Check out this blog about the average woman of the world in the picture above.

Coca-Cola Secret Recipe

The secret recipe for Coca-Cola is one of the most heavily guarded secrets ever!  Coke is the worlds most recognizable brand serving approximately 1.5 billion drinks a day!  There are only two people on the planet that for sure know the exact recipe and they are never in the same room, car, plane, etc to make sure they both don’t die together.  Well all that precaution maybe wasted.  Back in February of 1979 the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Coke’s home-town newspaper, there was a picture of the handwritten recipe in a leather-bound journal for the original Coca-Cola.  The recipe or “Merchandise 7x flavoring”, as it is dubbed by Coke, is shown in the journal and has Coke people worried that it is listed for all to see.  Click the link above to check out the secret ingredients and maybe try to make your own batch!
